DAY 6 CAMAGUEY, CUBA

Teatro principal balley company cuba camaguey — We went to an afternoon ballet presentation at **Teatro Principal Ballet** which was built in 1950. The **Theatro Principal** houses the Camagüey Ballet Company (second to Cuban National Ballet in Havana).

architecture nicholas guillen house — **House of Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista** 1902-1989 – Born in Camaguey, Guillen, he was a national Cuban poet, journalist, political activist, and writer.

Guillén’s father was a publisher. After protesting political votes being falsified, his father was assassinated by the government and his printing press destroyed. His son Nicholas, after being jailed for a period of time, joined the communist party in 1936. Due to his party affliction, he was not allowed entry into the USA. In 1953 after traveling to Chile, he was not allowed to re-enter into Cuba so he remained in exile for five years until Castro’s clan took over in 1959. His house is now a museum, but was closed when we were there.

casanova pottery studio camaguey cuba — We received a “hands-on” experience in pottery from Bernardo Casanova at his Casanova pottery Studio in Camaguey.

Camagüey is known for its red clay pots. You’ll notice that they line the streets and are in everyone’s homes in Camagüey. Known as Tinajón, (wide mouth jars), They started being made here in the 1600’s for everyday purposes. The Casanova’s are truly magnificent artists in pottery and Bernardo’s wife also shows off her paintings.

Camagüey holds a yearly event each December called La Fiesta del Tinajón to celebrate the Cuban culture.

Martha Jimenez’s bronze contemporary sculptures line the courtyard streets of Camagüey, Cuba. Her works achieved international awards and fame. Another one of her sculptures is shown below in front of El Paseo Restaurant where we ate that evening. Martha died Jan 21, 2015 at age 95 in Havana.

We continued walking and went down Maceo Street then back up Independence towards Hotel Santa Maria. We passed a lot of ice cream parlors, liquor stores and department stores that really had no inventory.
