Cuban architecture is absolutely amazing. From its early Spanish settlers, to its American influence boom in the early 1900’s; the country tells a story with its rich past history through its architecture. Walking through Havana is like traveling back in time.
Even Cuban cars show how history stopped in the 1950’s. After Castro took over and confiscated all businesses, Americans pulled-out leaving the country stuck in time. It is said in the 1950’s Cuba was to Americans what Las Vegas is today. Cuba was a bustling island. American businesses were heavily invested in the island in the 1950’s. Once Castro claimed all businesses to be that of the government, Americans left. They left behind its infrastructure such as their telephone industry, postal service and educational classrooms. The island remains exactly as Americans left it; almost untouched by any other influences.
I’ve been to most Caribbean islands and there is not one that I compare to Cuba. Not one has the rich architectural buildings and history that Cuba offers. Unlike Puerto Rico where there is more land mass, Cuba seems like its huge stone buildings could one day sink this small island. I really just want to go back one day and simply photograph the entire island; from its beautiful sandy shores to its people and ending on its architecture.
