SANTA CLARA , CUBA

Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA in the VILLA CLARA (Province), CUBA
(Day 7  if you are following “SEE ALL OF CUBA in 10 DAYS” blog post)

We stopped at the Che Guevara Mausoleum in Santa Clara which is in the Ernesto Guevara Sculptural Complex. It is a memorial located in “Plaza Che Guevara” which holds the remains of Ernesto “Che” Guevara a revolutionist who joined Fidel Castro in Mexico and helped to liberate Cuba in 1957/58. He then went on to help liberate other countries and was executed in Bolivia. Castro made sure his remains were returned to Cuba so he could have a proper memorial which would be cherished from that day forward.

Santa Clara is where the last battle of the revolution took place in 1958. Twelve days later Batista  (the prior ruler) fled the country and Fidel Castro declared victory.

We drove to Cayo Santa Maria  that night which was on its own island (or cay) and stayed at a beautiful 5 star Iberostar hotel.
