SPIRITUS SANCTI
(Day 7 if you are following the “ALL OF CUBA IN 10 Days blog post)

There are many stories about how the Guayabera shirt became popular. My favorite and the one that sounds the most promising is about an immigrant from Grenada that settled along the Yayabo River in 1709. José Pérez Rodríguez asked his wife to sew him a long sleeve shirt with four large pockets. He wanted to store his cigars in one pocket and other belongings in the others. It became popular because other men wanted to have the same shirt. Records have been found mentioning the “Guayabera Shirt” dating back to 1880. This museum has shown collections of Fidel Castro’s along with other popular celebrities’ Guayabera shirts. It was one of the most popular shirts in Cuba as well as in Mexico, Spain, and in the US; Miami and other towns. My husband just had to buy one before we left the island.

The super friendly chef came out to greet us, the atmosphere was like being at home with fabulous food.
Walking back I captured some great architecture scenes. Notice the little boy having his desert in the window with the black cornice of metal overhead. The cobble stone streets were not the funnest to walk on but it sure added to the environment.
