Travel Insurance Tips

INSURANCE:

I’ve been known to tell my husband that if an emergency medical situation happens to me while I’m at my Bahamas house, take me directly back to the USA. I don’t believe in the health care system in the Bahamas. This was especially apparent after seeing what my friends who also have houses there have gone through.

Having the proper insurance to cover a direct flight back is important for me. Fist check to see if your credit cards offer insurance. If not there are quite a few travel companies to choose from such as WorldNomads.com and Nomad-insurance. Companies such as Global Rescue will pick you up anywhere in the world with a life flight.

Some insurance agencies also work through groups such as Global Rescue and have an agreement with the NRA (National Rifle Association) for more services.

Things to look for in an insurance policy:

  • Life flight – evacuation from any of the countries you will be visiting.
  • Trip cancellation – Trip Interruption – Trip Delay
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage – Baggage Delay – The Airline once lost my husband’s suitcase in Marrakesh, Africa. He had to pay $1200 in taxi services to and from the airport to pick up the suitcase. The airport insisted that owners of lost luggage must pick up their own bags. Luckily, our travel insurance covered this.
