Macy’s Herald Square in the World’s Largest Store!
R. H. Macy and Company Store was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy. Between 1843 and 1855 Macy opened four retail stores including the original Macy’s in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts. In 1901 he relocated the flagship store to Heralds square and 34th where it stands today: 151 W 34th St, New York, NY 10001. Macy’s corporation declared on its store that their 2,500,000 square foot store is the Worlds Largest Store.  The star that is always shown next to the work Macy’s is from the tattoo Rowland Macy received working on a nantucket whaling ship prior to opening his stores. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a national historic Landmark. What calls my attention to this store is that they decorate elaborately during the different seasons. It won’t ever beat the Galleries in Lafayette in Paris, but it is something to take in none-the-less. Back to “Top things to do in Manhattan, New York” blog page.
